Today, February 14, 2012, Arizona Celebrates 100 years of Statehood. Students from Mesa’s Southwest Strings, add their voices to the festivities with a performance of the National Anthem for the Arizona Legislature. It’s a notable experience for the young elementary school string players—but it’s not the only reason they’re excited about Arizona’s Centennial. The students will be joined by a very special guest for this performance-superstar violinist, Itzhak Perlman. Read more

Lon Megargee (1883-1960) came to Arizona in 1896, and after a decade as a cowboy, decided to give up ranching for painting. At statehood, he executed fifteen murals for the State Capitol, and for nearly half a century he was intertwined with significant events and institutions connected with this state’s history. James DeMars  (b.1952)    Composer/conductor James DeMars belongs to a generation that is revealing a new integration of world music with the range, depth and stylistic variety of the classical tradition. His works include concerti for violin, piano, African drum ensemble, pow-wow singers, Native American flute, several cantatas, a requiem mass and an opera. Ensembles that perform DeMars’ music include the New York Choral Society, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Phoenix Symphony, California Symphony, and Chicago Sinfonietta.

Fine Artist Anne Coe

A fourth generation Arizonan, Coe was raised on a ranch in a remote part of the state where she developed a close affinity for the land. She later studied in Europe and Latin America, receiving her Master of Fine Arts degree at Arizona State University in 1980. Active as a professional painter for over twenty years, Coe has combined her artistic endeavors with a keen involvement with environmental activism during the span of her career. Read more

Cowboy poet Mike Dunn learned the life of a cowboy as a boy on his grandfather’s ranch along the east side of the Whetstone Mountains southwest of Benson.  It was there he experienced the values of home, land, love of family, and hard work that he writes about in his award winning poetry.  While still maintaining his portion of his family’s ranch, he lives in Mesa where he works at Boeing as an engineer. It is the goal of Territorial Brass to replicate the brass bands that were active in Arizona and New Mexico during the territorial periods. Brass bands were organized in the settlements of Prescott, Phoenix, Tucson, Tempe, Mesa, Yuma, Kingman, and many of the mining towns such as Bisbee, Morenci, Jerome and Globe. Read more

Melissa Cody was born in 1983 and is a fourth generation weaver. Her mother Lola Cody and grandmother Martha Schultz are both well known weavers. She made her first weaving at the age of 5 under her mother’s guidance and has been weaving ever since. Read more
